We all need a place

We all need a place

I have had my share of moving houses, but my teachers surpass me in this by a long shot. All of their moves have been an adventure and we have always helped them pack their whole place and transport their stuff and then unpack it all. I noticed something after a while. They had a curious habit that they performed each time. They did not start decorating their new homes by setting up their child’s bed or their bedroom. Everything was still in boxes when they both started looking for the place where they would meditate. As soon as they found it, they shared a smile and they immediately set up their altar, which instantly became the heart of their home.

We all have an instinct about what we need to feel at home in a new place. If all goes well we also keep in mind that there should be a place where we can finally focus on ourselves. If your need to meditate on your own at home is getting stronger, you will need a space to do it. What you want is a clean and calm place that feels good to step into.

I have had a few mishaps in this area. I will tell you what I have learned, so you do not have to make the same mistakes.

Look around your place and find a good spot.

You should definitely not start in the kitchen. Since as a mother I spend a lot of time in there, it first seemed like a good idea to place the alter around where the hob is, but it turned out to be wrong. There is too much energy collected in there, so I had no chance to quiet down. You will probably feel the same way about the hall and the child’s bedroom, let alone the bathroom. Two rooms are left; a calm bedroom or a light part of the living room you can isolate a bit.

I definitely recommend that the space you pick has natural light coming in. It should be a sunny, clean and calm part of your house. Make sure your meditation cushion is not placed by the radiator or a fireplace. It is better to have a bit of cold air than constant softness and warmth. Fresh air helps you keep your mind fresh, which is important in order to stay alert.

As soon as you find your space, know that you have managed to create the outer mandala of your meditation. If you chose well you can be sure that you have successfully sneaked a little magic in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
